DOE: Office
of Science
The Office of Science
is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical
sciences in the United States. It oversees - and is the principal
federal funding agency of - the Nation's research programs in high-energy
physics, nuclear physics, and fusion energy sciences.
In addition to many other
roles, The Office of Science manages the national laboratory system.
The national laboratory system, created over a half-century ago,
is an intrinsic component of the nuclear weapons complex.
Most - if not all - of the research and development for the complex
was carried out at the national laboratories, many of which are
physically located in or around major cleanup sites.
The Office of Science
oversees ten facilities within the national laboratory system (additional
facilities are overseen by other DOE offices):
Argonne
National Laboratory
Brookhaven
National Laboratory
Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory
Oak
Ridge National Laboratory
Pacific
Northwest National Laboratory
Ames
Laboratory
Fermi
National Accelerator Laboratory
Thomas
Jefferson National Accelerator Facility
Princeton
