Key Issues: High-Level Waste

Background

A permanent solution for the disposal of HLW and spent fuel is of great concern for sites and for states that possess such materials. In 1987, Congress designated Yucca Mountain, Nevada, as the potential site for the nation's geological repository for spent fuel and high-level waste. After detailed investigations of the site's suitability, in 2002 President George W. Bush signed House Joint Resolution 87 designating Yucca Mountain as the United States' national geological repository for nuclear waste. The Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM) is tasked with the Yucca Mountain Project and currently estimates the opening date of the repository as 2017. Under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act (NWPA), the amount of waste destined for Yucca Mountain is limited to 63,000 metric tons; the National Academy of Engineering estimates that the nation's nuclear reactors will produce this quantity by 2014.
